Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most frequent sexually transmitted infection. HPV is commonly found infecting both men and women. It is one of the leading cause cervical cancers which many women face throughout their lifetime.

How is HPV Spread?
HPV can be contracted through sexual contact with an infected person. It is commonly transmitted through vaginal or anal intercourse. Even if an infected person shows no signs or symptoms, HPV still can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. Even if you just had one sexual partner, there is a possibility of infecting with HIV. Depending on the individuals, symptoms may appear after a few weeks, months or even years to show up. As a result, determining whether or not you are infected becomes difficult.

What health problems might HPV cause?
HPV is a severe infection that can lead to cancer and genital warts.
The types of HPV that cause warts are different from the types that cause cancer. As a result, having genital warts caused by HPV does not guarantee that you will develop cancer.
Cancers caused by HPV often do not show symptoms until the cancer has progressed to a  later stages of growth.

How can I avoid getting infected with HPV?
Well, there are various approaches you might use to accomplish this.
  1. Get vaccinated. HPV vaccines are accessible to everyone between the ages of 9 and 26. The HPV vaccine can protect against nine kinds of HPV known to be related with cancer or genital warts.
  2. Get a cervical cancer screening or a health exam as well as PAP smears. Your healthcare providers will advise you on what measures to take and follow up with a consultation.
  3. Always use latex- condoms during intercourse and to practice safe sex.

Blood Test for Gastric Cancer

What is Gastric Cancer?
In our community, particularly in Singapore, gastric cancer is very common. Gastric cancer is a disease in which the malignant (cancer) cells form in the lining of the stomach. As it grows, it begins in the mucosa (the innermost layer of the stomach wall) and spreads to the outer layer. Gastric cancer is also known as a “silent killer” which barely show any symptoms if diagnosed. It is so common in the population that it is the 3rd leading cause of cancer worldwide, responsible for nearly 800,000 deaths each year.
Detecting for Gastric cancer has always been difficult or either too late; however, thanks for the new technology, we can now detect gastric cancer early by taking a blood test! When compared to previous methods, such as endoscopy, this method is faster and simpler.
Factors Associated with the Development of Gastric Cancer
  • Age: People over the age of 55 are at a higher risk.
  • Gender: Studies show that men are more likely than women to develop gastric cancer.
  •  Family history/genetics: Those who have a family history of gastric cancer are at a higher risk of developing the disease.
  •  Diet: A high-salt diet increases the risk of developing gastric cancer.
  •  Previous surgery or health conditions: People who have had stomach surgery, achlorhydria, or pernicious anemia are more likely to develop gastric cancer.
  •  Tobacco and alcohol: People who drink and smoke are at a higher risk.
  • Obesity: Being overweight raises the risk of developing gastric cancer.
Signs and symptoms of Gastric Cancer:
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Nausea and vomiting, particularly vomiting up solid food soon after eating
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Bloating of the stomach after meals
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sensation of food getting stuck in the throat while eating
Symptoms of advanced stomach cancer may include:
  • Weakness and fatigue
  •  Vomiting blood or passing blood in one's stool
  • Unexplained weight loss
If you have been experiencing any of these symptoms, please come down for a consultation with one of our doctors!

Health Screening for Men above 50yrs

Men are less likely to undergo frequent health checkups and screenings than women. Many men may argue “I feel perfectly fine, why I need to go to the doctor? “or “I live a  healthy lifestyle and I'm in good health”. What they don’t realize is that regular screenings will tell them more about their health such as diseases and conditions that haven't yet reveal but are causing symptoms.

Men over the age of 50, in particular, are encouraged to have frequent screening tests to ensure that their health is at its peak. They will be able to predict what is about to happen in a case-by-case scenario and make decisions based on that information. If a disease is discovered early through the screenings, you are able to receive treatment early to avoid health complications, or even death.

Screenings for men above 50 years:
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
  • Depression
  • Hepatitis C
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Lung Cancer
  • Colon Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Cholesterol
  • HIV
  • Overweight & Obesity

How to produce Healthy Sperm

Most of us don’t even bother about the health of our sperm, with the thinking that our bodies take care of whatever sperm we have. But on the contrary, we are in control of our bodies whether we like it or not. First we discuss the attributes of a healthy sperm.

Healthy sperm criteria
  1. Quantity – men are most likely fertile when their single ejaculation consist of more than 15 million sperm/ml.
  2. Quality – upon laboratory checking, sperms should have oval heads and long tails. So the more normal looking one’s sperm is, the higher quality it is.
  3. Movement/motility– to reach a egg, sperm must swim and wiggle through the cervix, fallopian tubes and uterus of a woman. If you have more than 40% moving sperm count, then you are most likely fertile.
Here are some of the tips to produce healthy sperm
  1. Weight management – looking good on the outside also means looking good for your sperms. When you lose weight, it reinvigorates your reproductive system since excess fat can lower your testosterone levels.
  2. Avoid soy – since soy is known to produce estrogen, sperm production may be compromised.
  3. Stay active – staying physically active will increase your sperm count.
  4. Visit your doctor – for proper nutrition and guide to a healthier sperm.
  5. Avoid smoking cigarettes – may lower sperm count and motility.
  6. Cut down caffeine – high soda/caffeine intake may slow down sperm production.
Having healthy sperms will definitely increase the chances of you and your partner having a baby. Starting a family can be an easy thing if you have healthy bodies. It is always best to consult your doctor for further check-ups and assessment of your health. It is better to be early for check-up than to rush and pressure ourselves to have a baby.

Testosterone Deficiency Treatment

The usual connotation of menopause is for women in that it refers to the stoppage of menopause  in women. This usually occurs in older women at the age of late 40’s and above. This is mainly due to the changes in estrogen secretion. For male, ageing diminishes the production of testosterone which possibly leads to such condition. Andropause for formality is a syndrome in which older men are associated with androgen deficiency. Though similar, this is not the same with women’s mid-life crisis. But it is usually also called male menopause. Aside from ageing, stress levels, health lifestyle (smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol) and obesity.

When do we know if a man has andropause? Some symptoms that may occur can be baldness, reduced body hair, decrease in body fat, feeling tired and stressed, high blood, and/or enlarged prostate. Furthermore, it can be drastic change in the mood such as irritability, aner, tiredness, low self-esteem, and anxiety. Some may show changes in sexual function such as reduced sexual drive and poor erections. In addition, some symptoms may also be seen physically through weight gain/loss, hair loss or lower muscle mass.

Though some of these may be normal to other people, it is best to consult a professional to be sure. It is also good that we get ourselves checked so that illness/diseases are managed as soon as possible. Some of the treatments can be with the use of testosterone supplements given to older men, testosterone replacements, and others. Doctors usually conduct additional tests if necessary. These are blood tests, hormone analysis, and BMI. We should never self medicate nor self administer such tests and diagnose ourselves just to save or for convenience’s sake. Remember that in health, we should never settle for second-grade check-ups or medication. Assuring ones health in a proper clinic with professionals is a must.

Premature Ejaculation

The normal course of sexual intercourse for men starts with emission, ejection then orgasm. Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common disorder. It is when ejection occurs sooner that it is desired to come. Its universal definition is the inability of a man to delay its ejection until the woman reached 50% of her orgasm. PE does not necessarily have a time frame. When partners still do not desire for an ejaculation, and it comes, this may cause the relationship some complications, then it can be regarded as premature.

Most causes of PE may just simply be unable to control such sexual response. However, in some cases, PE is caused by changes in prostate gland, diabetes and other neurological diseases. Some may be caused by problems encountered in the relationship. Such examples maybe the differing needs of partners, trust issues, broken relationships, discontent, and the likes.

There are many ways to cure or delay ejaculation.
  •  stop and start method – wherein you stimulate the penis and try to control the ejaculation.
  •  squeeze method – also called the masturbation technique
  •  use of medications
Men should not be embarrassed with their condition since this can be caused different factors. Some of the causes may not be even their fault or beyond their conscious thinking. It is always best to seek the help of a specialist to know the root cause of the condition. Your specialist/doctor will also diagnose your symptoms through clinical examination, do some investigations studying your medical history and present situation. After the first two steps, your doctor will end with your treatment. It is crucial to remain honest so that it can be analyzed accurately.

Erectile Dysfunction

In this article, we will be talking about the management of erectile dysfunction (ED). To begin with, erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve an erection for sexual intercourse. This may be a complex physiological and biological condition. Men of all ages are affected by this condition that ultimately changes their lives. This may be psychological, neurological or hormonal,. It can also be a symptom for cardiovascular diseases.

This table presents different categories and causes of erectile dysfunction.
Visit your doctor for accurate analysis of such condition. Your doctors usually have initial assessment. They would ask you about your sexual history, present medical condition, physiological health as well as surgical health. Some clinics would also use questionnaires to assess the gravity and causes of the condition. Afterwards, a physical examination is recommended as well as rectal examination of the prostate. Doctors would also give laboratory testing to check fluids from the person.

How do we prevent this condition? It should be noted that men should always maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, sensible eating and maintaining good physical health.

While men usually have short-term erectile dysfunction, that may be caused by short-term anxiety or stress, these dysfunctions can also be short-term. Once anxiety and stress disappear, it also disappears with it. However, when it persists, it is better to consult a doctor immediately to avoid long-term progression of the condition.
