For most of us, we often hear other women having breast cancer or having their mammography every now and then. But little do we realize the gravity of this disease and the high probability of getting one for ourselves. We may often hear someone dying from such cancer or surviving it, but do we realize the importance of breast check-up every now and then to avoid such dilemma in our lives that can ultimately change not only our selves but also affect the lives of the ones we love. In this article, we will be discussing first, the importance of having breast examinations, who should be having these, how to do it and what mammography is.

The primary goal of any breast examination is to ensure that there are no abnormal findings in the patient’s breasts. According to Dehn and Asprey (2007), 60% of breast cancer victims survived with the help of breast examinations.  The American Cancer Society recommends women over 40 years of age to annually have their breast examinations since women at this age are prone to breast irregularities (abnormalities increases with age). Clinical Breast Examination otherwise CBE, aims to detect early symptoms of breast cancer to prevent progression. Since most breast cancers are detectable at the latter stages, CBE or mammography can ultimately heighten the chances of patient survival. Women under 40 should have regular CBE while women 40 and above should get mammography annually.

A mammogram is an x-ray for the breast. This equipment is used to detect any tumors inside the breast. Women that are breastfeeding may still go through this, but it may not be accurate as breast tissues are still dense at this period. After such procedure (breasts are compressed), a result will come out that will be analyzed by the doctor. He/she will check if the results confirm abnormalities in the breast. Further tests such as biopsy will be done to ensure that the abnormality is indeed cancerous.

There are a lot of reasons for having breast cancer, it could be genetics, from drinking liquor, tobacco smoking, obesity, birth control pills, and the likes. Even if we have these systems to check tumors in the breast, it is still best to have a healthy lifestyle to avoid having one. Consult your doctor about breast examinations, better to be safe than sorry.

We begin to ask ourselves, “are we too old to have vaccinations?” the clear answer to that is “no”. Health is for everyone regardless of age. Whether we are adults or kids, vaccinations are always very important to our health and immune system. Other vaccines however are determined by factors like age, lifestyle, health condition and medical history.  Your doctor will have to examine your medical conditions to determine which vaccines are right for you. What are the reasons why we need vaccinations? Below are some:

  • At a young age, our bodies need vaccines to fight off any diseases that can hinder the process of proper growth and nutrition.
  • As we age, we need vaccinations to boosts our immune system and to help and support us fight off diseases.
  • Vaccines are there to prevent us from getting sick
  • To train our bodies to fight off such diseases that could be fatal diseases.
According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all adults need the following vaccinations:

  • Seasonal Flu – Influenza vaccine – every year
  • Tdap or Td vaccine – should get one if was not able to get one during adolescence. Protection from cough, tetanus and the likes.
  • HPV vaccine – protects both women and men from human papilloma viruses that causes cervical cancer
  • Depending on your medical condition, some adults may need other vaccines if they have diabetes 1 and 2, HIV infection, liver and renal disease and weak immune system.
  • For pregnant women – it is important to get Tdap vaccine every pregnancy at around 27-36 weeks .
  • For heath workers – vaccines for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, chicken pox and meningococcal are some of the important vaccines one should consider
  • To view a more detailed sample schedule of vaccinations please visit http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/downloads/adult/adult-schedule-easy-read.pdf
Lastly, it should be noted that there is a different diagnosis for each individual. It is very important to consult your doctor for assessment. You should not self-assess which vaccines you should take. Further, remember to keep an updated record of your vaccinations and health conditions. This will serve as a reference for any future sickness or medical check-up you will have.

During pregnancy, women undergo a lot of tests to make sure that the baby is healthy and that everything is okay. Men and women both have to be patient in making sure that these tests are done so that both the baby and the mother is safe from any illness. Some of the tests given are:

  • Blood tests - these tests are conducted to ensure that there is no infection and that there would be no complications during pregnancy or after giving birth.
  • Blood pressure – higher blood pressure can be a sign of pregnancy-induced hypertension. It should also be noted that lower blood pressure is normal in the middle of pregnancy.
  • Urinalysis – to track protein in the body, when there is protein in the urine, an infection may be present and should immediately be treated.
  • Blood count – during labour, the mother can lose a lot of blood and might need blood transfer, this process will determine the blood type that can be transferred to the patient. Anemia can also be present during pregnancy due to iron deficiency. The body needs extra iron to produce blood supply to the baby. Lack of iron can and may jeopardize both the mother and the baby.
  • Pap smear – is also a test to detect any cancer that might develop in the future. Antenatal care requires screening for pap smear if they have not taken any cervical screening for the past 2 years.
  • Gestational diabetes – is normally caught by women in pregnancy stages. Insulin hormones control the sugar levels inn the body. However, during pregnancy, some women have higher levels of glucose or sugar in the body that the insulin hormone cannot regulate. A check up on this is necessary to keep the mother and baby healthy.
Keeping track of your changes and developments during and after pregnancy is vital for a healthier you and a healthy future for the baby. Taking any medications during pregnancy should always be consulted by your physician and monitored. Do not take matters to your own hands since you are dealing with two lives. Always remember that things are viewed upon differently during pregnancy stages.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis is caused by 5 different strains of virus (A, B, C, D and E) that inflames the liver. While all viruses caused liver inflammation, they differ in diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Symptoms may be similar such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, pain in the stomach, jaundice and joint pain. Today, we will be discussing the more common types of hepatitis – A, B and C.

Hepatitis A - HAV

Usually is transferred by direct oral contact, sexual contact and ingestion of food/water. Its incubation period is around15 to 50 days. Fortunately, people infected with this disease are likely to heal with no liver damage. HAV is commonly found in the feces of people infected. The treatment for HAV is supportive care and people infected should avoid alcoholic beverages. Direct guidance of the doctor should be given. Bed rest or quarantine or any admissions are not necessary.

Hepatitis B – HBV

Usually is transferred by through body fluids. When one person who is infected transfers his/her body fluids to a non-infected person, the latter becomes ill. It can also be contacted through unprotected sex, use of contaminated needles or at birth. Its incubation period is approximately 45 to 160 days. Fortunately, just like HAV, this virus is rarely fatal and people recover with no liver damage.  The treatment for HBV is evaluation and check-up every 6 to 12 months. Some medications are also given to prevent further liver problems but there is no real cure for HBV infection. Also, people infected should also avoid drinking alcohol.

Hepatitis C – HCV

Usually is contacted through blood by sharing needles, sexual contract and birth of an infected mother. Its incubation period is around 14 to 180 days. 60-70& of people infected develop lover diseases, the rest will recover with no lasting liver damage. People with this infection should consult their doctor every 6-12 months. The most suggested treatment would be combination therapy and it is best for patients to avoid drinking alcoholic beverages.

While there are measures to treat such diseases, it is better to always prevent them from coming. Vaccinations, vitamins, practicing safe sex, making sure all needles are sterile and keeping our immune system high are some of few things we can do to avoid hepatitis. Please consult your doctor for any questions. Let us not put the fate of our kids or loved ones on our own hands.
